How Surrogate Compensation Is Paid

One of the most common questions we hear is: "How much do surrogates make, and when do I get paid?" Here's the complete payment timeline — from the first allowance to the final base compensation payment.

1
Before Pregnancy

Escrow Account Funded

Before your journey begins, the intended parents fund a secure escrow account that holds all compensation and expense funds. This guarantees your payments are available before any medical procedures take place. The escrow is managed by an independent third party — not by the agency or the intended parents — so your money is protected throughout the journey.

2
During Screening

Screening & Legal Phase Payments

Certain expenses are paid as they occur — before you're even pregnant. Your independent attorney's fees are covered from the start. Travel and accommodation costs for medical screening at the fertility clinic are reimbursed promptly. Any medical co-pays or out-of-pocket expenses related to screening are also covered at this stage.

3
Confirmed Pregnancy

Monthly Base Compensation Begins

Once pregnancy is confirmed (typically after the first ultrasound at 6–8 weeks showing a fetal heartbeat), your base compensation begins. The total base amount is divided into equal monthly installments, deposited on the 1st of each month. You also receive the $1,000 pregnancy confirmation bonus at this time, and your monthly allowance ($400–$500) starts as well.

4
Throughout Pregnancy

Allowances & Benefit Payments

Throughout your pregnancy, you continue receiving your monthly base compensation installments and monthly allowance. Additional benefits are paid as they become due: maternity clothing allowance (typically at 12–16 weeks), housekeeping allowance (starting at 28 weeks, $100/week), and any procedure-related fees. If you need bed rest or are carrying multiples, additional allowances may apply as specified in your contract.

5
After Delivery

Final Payment & Balance Settlement

After delivery, any remaining balance of your base compensation is paid in full — typically within 15 days of delivery. This includes any outstanding allowance payments, the C-section fee if applicable, and the final portion of your base compensation. Your health insurance coverage continues for a minimum of 3 months postpartum as specified in your contract.

100% of Your Expenses Are Covered

As a surrogate mother at New Grace Fertility, you never pay for any journey-related expense. Everything is funded by the intended parents and managed through the secure escrow account. These expenses are completely separate from your base compensation — meaning your pay goes entirely to you.
